Shanghai Darling

When the movie was over I saw Shamir, the director, an Aryan woman in a
short black skirt with a close-cropped butch haircut. Her blue-green eyes
radiated enthusiasm and her legs were straight as a ramrod. Mark introduced
me. She looked at me in a very peculiar way and held her hand out in a
reserved manner. But I put out my arms and gave her a hug. She seemed a
bit surprised, though rather pleased.
Just like Mark had told me beforehand, Shamir is a genuine lesbian. There
was something in her eyes -- a subtle coquettishness -- that is different
than one finds in typical encounters with women.
We sat on the second floor next to an ornate balustrade, taking a drink
amidst an ambience composed of shimmering light, smoke-veiled wall paintings
and distant yet appealing music. Tony, an ABC who is one of the owners
of the Park, was running back and forth downstairs exchanging courtesies.
As soon as he looked up and saw us, he hastily made a gesture to say "Hi
there." Tony
Shamir coughed, took my red satin handbag with embroidery, looked at it
closely for a moment, and gave me a little smile. "I have to admit that
I didn't totally understand your film," Mark said to Shamir.
"Nor did I," I said. "But I was mesmerized by the colors. Those rays of
light clashing with one another, and yet mutually attracting too. You'd
be hard put to find such color combinations in another movie or in a clothing
store on the street."
"I've never considered the relationship between a clothing store and my
film," she laughed.
"After the film the feeling I have is like a dream I had before, or a story
someone had already told me. Maybe it's like a sensation I had for a fleeting
moment while reading Coco's novel. At any rate, I really like this feeling...like
smashing something to pieces, and then piecing it back together. It makes
you feel sentimental."
"Really?", Shamir said, putting her hand in front of her chest. Her voice
had a strange childlike quality. One moment her motions would be like placid
water, but then she would suddenly explode. When she agreed with you she
would stick out her hand and grab you by the wrist, saying most convincingly:
"Yes, that's exactly right."
This is a woman who could leave a deep impression on others. She is rich
in experience, and went to the North Pole to shoot a film. She climbed
atop a huge frozen waterfall there dubbed "The Moaning Wall," because it
seemed as if it were made from congealed tears. She is currently working
for Germany's biggest cultural exchange organization, DAAD, where she is
responsible for cinematography. She knows all the underground film makers
and avant garde professionals in Beijing and Shanghai. Every year her organization
organizes events, inviting artists, including those from China, to come
to Germany. A lot of people like her, but my upbeat impression of her was
came directly from the film we had just seen, "Flight Itinerary."
She asked about my novel. I told her that it's all a true and chaotic story
of what happens in the flower garden with a post-colonial flavor that is
Shanghai. " One of the novels has been translated into German. If you are
interested, I can give you a copy," I said with genuine feeling. It was
translated by a student of German who fell for me back when I was still
at Fudan University. He was a top student who left to study in Berlin before
he even graduated.
She smiled at me with a smile like an unnamed flower blossoming in the
spring wind. She handed me her namecard complete with e-mail address, telephone
and fax numbers and address. "Don't lose it. We'll have the chance to meet
again," she said.
"Oh dear, you've fallen for Coco," joked Mark. "So what?" Shamir laughed.
"She's a girl unlike any other. Not just smart, but very pretty too. A
real-life darling...I'll bet you she'd say anything, and do anything."
Those words moved me, freezing my body for an instant as if a burst of
electricity had run through me. To this day I don't understand why it is
women -- without exception -- who best understand other women. A woman
can always flawlessly uncover another woman's most subtle, most secret
characteristics. So what?
Thanks to those words of appreciation, before we parted we stood at the
entrance to the Park, kissing intimately in the shadow of the trees. Her
moist and inviting lips attracted me like a rare flower's stamen, and I
felt a sudden carnal pleasure as our tongues intertwined smoothly and perilously,
like precious silk. I can't tell how it was that I overstepped the bounds
of ambiguity with this unfamiliar woman -- from chatting to kissing, from
a goodbye kiss to one of passion.
A street light suddenly went out. A feeling of heaviness, like a heavy
blow, and yet one of detachment too, came over me. Her hand touched my
chest, and through my clothing lightly twisted my nipple, firm as a flower
bud, while her other hand slid down to my thigh.
The street light suddenly began to shine again and I awoke from my dream,
wresting myself from the embrace of that mysterious power of attraction.
Mark was standing there in silent enjoyment of this scene, as if it were
a real treat.
"You're so cute -- too bad I have to go back to Germany tomorrow," said
Shamir, softly. Then she hugged Mark. "Goodbye."
Sitting in Mark's Buick, I still felt a bit as if in a trance. "I really
don't know...what that was all about," I said, lightly stroking my hair.
"First of all you were bewitched by her film," Mark took my hand and gave
it a kiss. "A sensitive woman kissing another sensitive woman takes one's
breath away. That kind of sensitivity is sensual." Those words didn't sound
male chauvinist at all; To the contrary, they were understanding in a way
that moves a woman.
Thanks to his words, dripping wet I soared in the clouds all along the
way back until we reached that apartment of his so big one can go crazy
anywhere in it. I turned on the phonograph and put on a record of Xu Li-Xian
singing a Suzhou ballad, took off my clothes and walked toward the kitchen.
He suddenly remembered those blueberry fruit jellies which I love were
in the fridge, and signalled to wait for an instant. He went into the kitchen
where I heard dishes clanging, and then he walked out of the kitchen stark
naked, carrying a platter of fruit jellies and a silver spoon over by the
bed. "Honey, eat one," bringing the silver spoon right up to my lips.
With each of us enjoying our platter of delicious jellies one mouthful
at a time, suddenly we broke out in laughter. With one shove he pushed
me down, and then like a brute living in a cave on the shores of the Adriatic,
he buried his head and began kissing my abdomen with his sweet, icy tongue.
"You have a truly splendid soft spot. There isn't another of such quality
between all of Berlin and Shanghai." My eyes wide open and staring at the
ceiling, my body's pleasure anesthetized my brain, robbing me of all my
wits. "Most Lovely Soft Spot" does sound neat, perhaps far more moving
to a woman than "Best Novel of the Year."
He ate a fruit jelly and then a mouthful of me, for all the world like
a cannibal chief. When he straightened up and went inside I quickly lost
control and exploded. "Do you want a kid?" he muttered quite irresponsibly,
ramming ahead with force. In that instant, a feeling of sexual pleasure
swept over me as if mountains were being toppled, and seas being overturned,
until it seemed I was making love with every man under the sky.
